Dear readers,
If you are like me, one of your favorite parts of attending a wedding is eating the delicious wedding cake. So it makes sense that one of the best parts of wedding planning is the cake tasting! Below are a few tips to help make sure you get the most out of the experience.
1. Embrace something new.
Yes, we all have our favorite flavors of cake and preferred icing (cream cheese, please!) But when choosing your wedding cake, it's a good idea to try some different combinations than you'd normally pick. If you gravitate towards chocolate cake with white icing, for example, pair a butter-yellow cake with chocolate mousse or ganache filling. Or if you love fruit flavors, try an almond-flavored cake with a layer of fresh raspberries or mango preserves. Your bakery should provide a wide range of different cake flavors, icings and fillings for you to try - so go crazy! You could find a new favorite.
2. Choose what you and your fiance love - don't worry about every guest's preference.
No doubt that when choosing your wedding entrees or buffet choices, you've been a very considerate bride, taking care to think of options for your vegetarian friends or family members with diet restrictions. But when it comes to the cake, I'm a firm believer that you can't please everyone - so you've got to please yourself (and your future spouse!) Sure, maybe avoid carrot cake with nuts (seems everyone's got an allergy these days). But don't agonize over choosing a cake that your mom, his grandmother, your cousin's husband and his best friend's dog will like. Trust me - whatever cake you choose will get eaten, one way or the other. And, bonus - you'll likely be enjoying it again on your 1st anniversary - just another reason to choose something you love.
3. Consider a smaller "display" cake, with extra sheet cakes in the kitchen.
As you've probably noticed, weddings aren't cheap (newsflash, I know). A little tip to cut costs on the sly: ask your baker to make one smaller, beautiful, decorated cake in the design of your choice. Then ask her to make a few sheet cakes in the same flavor, which can be plated straight from the kitchen. Your guests will never know the difference, and you could save yourself some serious dough (pun intended!).
Lastly, this process should be (and is!) fun. Your cake should reflect your tastes - literally and figuratively. If you're happy with it, your guests will be happy with it. So get out there and get tasting!
